MM21 DHC【MM21 DHC (Central Plant and No. 2 Plant)】

Company Outline

The company MM21 DHC was established in October 1986, its mission being to improve the environment in the Minato Mirai 21 district and to contribute to the area’s safety and comfort by providing an efficient supply of energy via a DHC (district heating and cooling) system. In the more than 30 years since then, the company has provided a stable supply of high-quality, low-priced thermal energy. Today, the district served by the company’s DHC system is the largest of its kind in Japan in terms of sales volume and floor area served.
The Minato Mirai 21 district is a leader in decarbonization in Japan. MM21 DHC contributes to the district’s decarbonization efforts on many fronts. For example, the company is implementing measures to reduce to zero by 2030 its CO2 emissions from the use of electricity in generating thermal energy. The company is also working to maintain a stable supply of thermal energy and to strengthen its BCP (business continuity plan), as it supports the development of the Minato Mirai 21 district and grows along with it.

Facility introduction

The Central Plant and the No. 2 Plant are linked by piping, which enables coordination between the two plants. This coordination enables the efficient use of equipment, provides secure backup functions, and reduces needed equipment capacity and personnel.

The Central Plant, located near Sakuragicho Station, has six stories above ground and one below. It began operation at the same time as the DHC system, in April 1989.

The Central Plant sources heat from its large latent-heat-storage (LHS) system. The plant supplies customers with stable heating and cooling through the use of highly reliable equipment, including electric centrifugal chillers, absorption chillers, steam-turbine centrifugal chillers, water-tube boilers, and furnace-pipe fire-tube boilers.

The No. 2 Plant occupies the fourth and fifth basement floors of Queen’s Square Yokohama, where it began operation in July 1997. The plant uses large-capacity, highly efficient equipment, including double-effect absorption chillers and one of the world’s largest electric centrifugal chillers.
