The theme of the 27th International Conference on Structural Mechanics in Reactor Technology (SMiRT 27) was Next Generation Structural Mechanics in Reactor Technology, which was based on lessons learned from the 2011 nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. Held on March 3–8, 2024, at Japan’s largest comprehensive convention venue, PACIFICO Yokohama, the conference brought together many prominent academia, engineers, and others in this field for a dynamic event that advanced the dialogue on the promising future of nuclear technology.

Held every three years, the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) World Congress is the largest event in the interdisciplinary field of automatic control science and technology. The 2023 in-person conference took place at the PACIFICO Yokohama from July 9 to 14 and was presided over by robotics expert Professor Hajime Asama of the University of Tokyo. Although IFAC has a focus on automated technologies and robotics, the 2023 conference offered invaluable opportunities for human interactions, with 3206 participants from 62 countries and regions gathered to share ideas and collaborate in a safe environment. Supporting this cooperative atmosphere was the vision of wa, the Japanese word for “harmony.”

On behalf of the World Federation of Occupational Therapists (WFOT) I was delighted to participate in the 16th WFOT World Congress in Yokohama, Japan in June 2014.
I would urge any organisation considering holding a congress in Japan to investigate the wonderful opportunities in Yokohama. Not only are the convention facilities world class, the city itself is a delightful place to visit with its many restaurants and cafes, great shopping, friendly people and a comfortable pace of life. There is an extensive range of accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets and easy access to all of the popular areas. Yokohama certainly provided WFOT with a wonderful congress venue and a truly exciting cultural experience.

On behalf of the International Sociological Association (ISA), I was very pleased to participate in the XVIII ISA World Congress of Sociology which brought more than six thousand sociologists and social scientists from ninety-five countries to Yokohama, Japan in July 2014.
I strongly recommend any association planning to hold an international conference to consider the friendly city of Yokohama. The conference facilities and PACIFICO Convention Center are outstanding and the city offers a wide array of restaurants and types of accommodation that can meet the diverse tastes and budgets. Holding ISA Congress in Yokohama provided an opportunity for participants to share our research and also to learn about the traditions, history and culture of Japan.
