Learn through food how Yokohama has developed by accepting various cultures. Since Yokohama opened its port 150 years ago, it has been accepting various people and cultures positively, and has consequentially developed as a modern metropolis. Chinatown especially is an area symbolic of integrating food from various cultures. Japan has inherited unique culture through Chinatown.
Yokohama Chinatown
Yokohama Chinatown developed after the port of Yokohama opened, and it became the residence of the many Chinese traders who played an intermediary role between foreigners and residents. Yokohama Chinatown is known as one of the largest Chinatowns in the world. There are more than 600 shops in only a 250,000 square meter area, and most of them are Chinese restaurants. Chinese cuisine is geographically divided into 4 common food types which are: Beijing cuisine, Shanghai cuisine, Sichuan cuisine and Guangdong cuisine. Yokohama Chinatown has all four of them, and Taiwanese and Hong Kong cuisine are also popular nowadays. Yokohama Chinatown is now recognized and popular as a ‘city of gastronomy’.
